Rangers captain James Tavernier has told BBC Sport that his side can do a “really good job” this season following a busy summer of signings at Ibrox.
On the chalkboard
Steven Gerrard has added eight new signings to his Rangers side this summer and his club captain is getting excited for the coming season. They include £3.5m Bologna defender Filip Helander as well as impressive free signings Joe Aribo, Jordan Jones and Steve Davis.
This has given the 27-year-old reason to be optimistic for the season, as he stated: “The gaffer has made some great additions, improved the squad; I’m really excited to see the season unfold. I believe in the squad and believe we can do a really good job.”
Tavernier’s comments come as his side prepare not just for the coming domestic campaign, which kicks off on Sunday against Kilmarnock, but also a gruelling Europa League qualifying run.
Reasons to be cheerful
The former Newcastle right-back’s excitement is well supported by the performances both on and off the pitch so far this season.
It has been a busy summer with the eight new additions coming and the deadwood being cut to free up room for the new arrivals. As things stand, the squad looks well balanced with big earners Kyle Lafferty, Gareth McAuley and Daniel Candeias moved on from Ibrox this summer, with the likes of Jason Holt and Graham Dorrans expected to follow, per Football Insider.
On top of what looks a progressive transfer window on paper, the way in which the club have started the season is a cause for Gers optimism. Gerrard’s men are yet to be beaten this season across the Europa League qualifiers and some testing friendlies.
Moreover, in their opening seven games (four bounce matches and three qualifiers) they’ve got an impressive goal difference of +22, having conceded just once, against Blackburn Rovers.
It may have been friendlies and poor European sides but the way in which the team has gelled, particularly the defence, is very encouraging for those of a light blue persuasion. If the early season form is anything to go by then it would be no surprise to see this well-balanced Rangers squad with some silverware around their necks come this time next year.
