A minor ankle injury kept Gomez out of last Saturday’s 3-0 victory over Watford at Vicarage Road, which gave Lovren an opportunity to impress.
The Croatian international managed to do so as he helped Van Dijk keep a clean sheet on the road.
It seems cruel to drop a player after such a good performance, but with Gomez expecting to be fit to face Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League on Wednesday night, Lovren may have to drop back to the bench.
