da pinnacle: Birmingham City manager Garry Monk should target Norway international Alexander Sorloth in a mid-season raid on Crystal Palace to boost his side’s goal tally.
What’s the word?
The 22-year-old only joined Roy Hodgson in south London in January, when the Croydon club signed the striker from FC Midtjylland on deadline day.
At the Danish Superliga club, the 6ft 4in striker re-established his goal threat by finding the net ten times in 19 games having only joined in the summer of 2017 on a four-year contract.
His time at Crystal Palace has shown the Rosenborg product is not yet ready to cut it in the Premier League, making 15 appearances, mostly from the bench, but only managing to score once in the Carabao Cup with a decisive finish against Swansea.
Birmingham therefore should look to help Crystal Palace and themselves with a loan move for the striker now valued at £6m by Transfermarkt.
He wants game time, Birmingham need more scorers
Earlier this month while away on international duty, Sorloth spoke of his desire to get more game time after growing frustrated with his bit-part status at Selhurst Park.
Speaking to Norwegian tabloid newspaper Verdens Gang, as translated by Football.London, Sorloth stated: “It’s frustrating to sit on the bench, especially when I’m young and hungry to show how good I am.
“I arrived at Palace with very high confidence so it is a contrast.
“There is still a lot of time before January and there are a lot of matches.
“So, let’s see what’s happening in January.”
At present the Blues only have two strikers regularly finding the net in 29-year-old Lukas Jutkiewicz and 22-year-old Che Adams. Between the pair they have 13 goals, but beyond that the highest scorer is still on one.
Bringing Sorloth to St Andrew’s would give Garry Monk another option up top, as Birmingham will not be able to rely on the goals of just two players to carry them over an entire season.
Already results have shown Monk needs further options to get over the line with all three points, having drawn a league-high eight games – more than half of the games played.
Sorloth would not only add his height to the attack, something that makes him an obvious threat from set pieces, but he is a player who likes to get the ball on the floor and link up with his teammates.
