da brwin: Tuesday night’s Capital One Cup round three fixtures failed to provide any upsets as Hull, Manchester City, Southampton, Sunderland, Chelsea and Norwich all overcame lower league opposition.
da bwin: But it wasn’t quite plain sailing for all, though, with Norwich coming from behind to beat Watford after extra time and Hull narrowly seeing off Huddersfield.
Aston Villa 0-4 Tottenham Hotspur
Jermain Defoe bagged another brace as Spurs made easy work of Aston Villa at Villa Park. The win was secured with efforts from Paulinho and Nacer Chadli, but the hosts will feel hard done by after they had a perfect penalty shout turned down.
Nicklas Helenius had his shorts pulled down by Jan Vertonghen when through on goal, leading to Paul Lambert describing the decision as “a strange decision.”
Burnley 2-1 Nottingham Forest
Burnley fell behind to a Matt Derbyshire goal in the first half but Danny Ings’ brace continued his goal scoring streak and secured the hosts’ place in round three.
Ings now has nine in 11 matches so far this season but manager Sean Dyche isn’t surprised, explaining: “He’s got nice energy and we know he’s got quality.”
Hull 1-0 Huddersfield
Nick Proschwitz netted a rare goal to send Huddersfield packing after a tame match at the KC Stadium.
The German has struggled to adapt to English football since arriving from SC Paderborn 07 last year, but his fourth goal for the club will have provided much needed confidence.
Hull manager Steve Bruce said: “It was a comfortable evening for us but it was like watching paint dry.”
Leicester City 2-1 Derby County
The Rams looked set to continue their unbeaten away record this season before Anthony Knockaert and Danny Drinkwater both struck inside the final 15 minutes to secure Leicester’s ticket in to round three.
Chris Martin’s first-half opener looked to be enough for the visitors, but they failed see the game off with a second.
Derby boss Nigel Clough said: “We felt we’d done enough to win the game. It was an excellent away performance and the one-goal lead was not sufficient reward for how we played.”
Manchester City 5-0 Wigan Athletic
Stevan Jovetic’s first goals for City helped them brush Wigan aside without much of a fight. Jesus Navas also netted his first Etihad goal, while Edin Dzeko and a Yaya Toure free-kick finished the Championship side off.
Manuel Pellegrini made several changes to the side that beat United on Sunday, but demanded the same performance from his stars.
He said: “We can change names but for me it was very important to see the same team we saw last Sunday, the same philosophy of football and the same high performance.”
Southampton 2-0 Bristol City
The Saints are through to round four after an unconvincing victory over Bristol City at St. Mary’s.
Gaston Ramirez’s first-half volley and a late Jos Hooiveld header were enough for the hosts but City will feel they could have caused an upset after enjoying 52% of the possession, but they were wasteful in front of goal.
City boss Sean O’Driscoll said: “I am pleased with the way the players performed, pleased with the way we approached the game.”
Sunderland 2-0 Peterborough
Sunderland began life without Paolo Di Canio with a comfortable victory against Peterborough.
Goals from Emanuele Giaccherini and Valentin Roberge gave caretaker boss Kevin Ball a winning start to life in the hot-seat and he was understandably pleased.
“Some of the football we played was excellent and the chances they created showed they have confidence,” he said.
Swindon 0-2 Chelsea
First-half goals from Fernando Torres and Ramires sealed Chelsea’s place in round four, although Jose Mourinho will be less than pleased with his side’s performance.
League One Swindon will feel that had enough about them on the night to cause an upset, but it just wasn’t to be.
Boss Mark Cooper said: “I was pleased with out possession but just a but disappointed we haven’t really tested Chelsea enough.”
Watford 2-3 Norwich City
Canaries new boy Gary Hooper took this tie to extra-time with a last gasp equaliser before bagging the winner five minutes from the end of added time.
Javier Acuna and Marco Faraoni’s goals looked to have put Watford out of sight, but Josh Murphy sparked Norwich’s come-back in the 77th minute before Hooper pounced at the death.
Watford boss Zola said: “It’s a crushing feeling of course.”
West Ham 3-2 Cardiff City
Ravel Morrison scored after just 20 seconds to send the Hammers on their way to what should have been a comfortable win over Cardiff.
Matt Jarvis doubled the host’s lead in the eight minute, but a Craig Noone screamer and a Peter Odemwingie tap-in got the visitors back in it. But Ricardo Vaz Te headed in Jack Collison’s cross late on to send West Ham through.
Cardiff boss Malky Mackay said: “We had a mountain to climb with the way we started.”
Fulham 2-1 Everton
Fulham’s first win at Craven Cottage since April sees them in the hat for the round four draw.
Steven Naismith put unbeaten Everton in front after just 12 minutes, but second-half goals from Dimitar Berbatov and Darren Bent secured Fulham’s victory.
Martin Jol said: “It’s a big relief.”
