da betsul: Southampton have been quite the surprise package so far this season and a lot of their fans are making big noises on the online forums about potentially competing to be one of the best five clubs in the country. Are they getting ahead of themselves? Or have The Saints actually started to look good enough to be awarded such an accolade?
da bet sport: The underdog always does well in football and I find that it really helps when people write you off completely and expect nothing more than your team to be humiliated, pillaged and to become the league’s whipping boys – it really spurs a team on to do a lot better than they actually might have done otherwise.
Saints fans can hardly blame anyone for condemning the team to certain doom at the start of the season, however, and it was pretty evident on social media during the summer’s exodus of players that even their own fans were concerned at the club’s chances of survival in the Premier League.
Since their promotion back to the top flight of English football, Southampton have continuously surprised everybody with how well they have done. Maybe we should all have learnt our lesson by now to stop writing this team off! A tip of the hat to everyone involved at the club who dragged them up from the depths of the abyss (or as some people call it, League One) to where they are today. Granted, it was with a different set of players and manager than they have now, but the footballing philosophy has remained a good one, with the winning and never say die mentality remaining the same.
They say in business you cannot stand still, you’re either growing or you’re going backwards. Well that seems like the perfect analogy to use with Southampton. They do not seem to be content with being just another mid table club, bobbing along with Premiership survival and the odd cup run here and there -which a good few clubs are guilty off these days (there is that much money to lose with relegation that you cannot blame a club for wanting stability), they want to continuously improve on what they achieved the season before.
A lot of rebuilding has had, and will continue, to have to be done at the club after so many players left in the Summer, however the squad that they have at present seems to be that bit more united, that little bit better than last season’s, and they look a very decent side. They are organised, compact, hard to break down and good on the attack. They have all the right combinations and ingredients that a club of their size need to be able to push on from their current mid-table status and potentially qualify for Europe.
So far this season it has been a pleasure to watch them play and they sit comfortably in third place in the table, which is not flattering by any means – it is earned!
The Saints to many are quite the surprise package, but they shouldn’t be! They have been improving steadily for years now and continue to move forwards and look above them. More so they look to be doing it within their means instead of by breaking FFP regulations or getting into debt. The big clubs need to look over their shoulders because Southampton are there, ready to occupy a top five spot. They might not have the likes of Angel Di Maria or Diego Costa in their team, but they have grit and determination, so it would be wrong to write them off as just an average mid table team (although a strong mid table finish would be no bad result for them either).
