da leao: According to reports in The Scottish Sun, Celtic are set to launch a late search for a centre-back ahead of January’s transfer deadline.
What’s the word?
Celtic are waiting on the results of scans to find out the extent of Filip Benkovic’s absence from action.
The defender suffered a leg injury in the 3-0 win over Hamilton with the best case scenario being that he will be ruled out for a month – missing both legs of the Europa League clash with Valencia.
Loan signing Benkovic will return to Leicester City at the end of the season with his injury forcing Celtic to look at the transfer market – The Scottish Sun claim they’re likely to explore options.
With Dedryck Boyata currently injured and out of contract in the summer, the nightmare scenario that Celtic were facing at the end of the season has been brought forward.
Kris Ajer and Jozo Simunovic are likely to be paired together on Wednesday against St Johnstone and could well remain in place for the Valencia ties next month.
Another Dembele-esque failure?
The only consolation with this injury is that it has happened during the transfer window which gives the club time to explore other options. Whether Celtic can put a plan in place to bring in another defender remains to be seen, the summer failure to replace Moussa Dembele is still fresh in the memory.
Aberdeen’s Scott McKenna was mentioned as a potential recruit heading into the January window but he too is currently out of action due to a hamstring injury. Obvious candidates then, are few and far between – but there’s still some time left to come up with a solution.
