October 03 1992 – Rangers defeat Falkirk 4-0 at Ibrox to maintain their lead at the top of the table, with all four goals scored by European Golden Boot holder Ally McCoist. In just his 17th appearance of the season, this was his fourth hat-trick and took his total for the season to 21. He would go on to retain the Golden Boot, despite missing the last month of the season with a broken leg.

October 04 2009 – Rangers win the first Old Firm game of the season, defeating Tony Mowbray’s Celtic 2-1 at Ibrox. Kenny Miller is the hero of the day, scoring twice in the opening 16 minutes. Walter Smith’s men ground out the win despite being without a number of regulars, with both Andy Little and Stevie Smith starting the game. Little played at right back, but himself had to go off injured early in the match.
October 05 1977 – Rangers demolish Billy McNeill’s Aberdeen 6-1 at Ibrox in a midweek League Cup tie, with a performance described by Jock Wallace as the best in his time as manager. Summer signing Gordon Smith hit his only ever Rangers hat-trick, with goals by Derek Johnstone, Alex Miller and Alex MacDonald completing the rout. It left the second leg at Pittodrie as a formality, in a season Rangers would go on to win the treble.
October 06 2019 – Rangers go top of the Premiership for the first time in almost a year with a 5-0 hammering of Hamilton Accies at Ibrox. Jermain Defoe hits the net three times, taking his recent goalscoring spree to six goals in his last three outings. A Connor Goldson header and a Borna Barisic free kick also beat goalkeeper Owain Williams, on an afternoon enjoyed all the more by the Rangers support by the half-time appearance on the pitch of the much-loved Paul Gascoigne.
October 07 1944 – Rangers and Celtic contest the Glasgow Cup Final at Hampden, and it looks briefly as if Bill Struth’s dominant team will suffer a surprise defeat after Celtic race into a two-goal lead. But the joy amongst the Celtic fans in the 50,000 crowd is short-lived, as Rangers roar back to grab a famous comeback victory. Goals by Scot Symon and Willie Waddell levelled the scores, before a late George Young penalty meant that the trophy was once again destined for Ibrox.
October 08 1988 – Rangers are defeated 2-1 at Pittodrie to suffer their first loss of the season, but the result seemed insignificant after a horrific knee injury suffered by young midfielder Ian Durrant in the first half. By far the brightest potential star in the Scottish game, Durrant’s knee was shattered by an act of brutal thuggery perpetrated by Aberdeen’s Neil Simpson. Incredibly, the referee on the day, Louis Thow, deemed this assault only worthy of a yellow card. Durrant would endure three years of painful rehabilitation before being able to fully resume his career, while Simpson’s actions are still celebrated to this day by a support that shames humanity.
October 09 2001 – Georgian forward Shota Arveladze makes his Rangers debut in a League Cup match against Airdrie, and makes an instant impression with two first-half goals in a 3-0 victory. The third goal was scored late on by Dutch international Arthur Numan, while another international left back, Michael Ball, also played his first match for the club.
