da prosport bet: Rangers are eyeing a move for Rennes defender Mexer, according to reports in France.
What’s the story?
According to L’Equipe, Steven Gerrard was in Rennes earlier this week, and Mexer is a target for the Gers boss.
The Ligue 1 outfit toppled heavy favourites Paris Saint-Germain in the Coupe de France final last weekend before drawing 2-2 with Monaco during the week.
Mexer played every minute of both matches, and scored an iconic equaliser in their triumph over PSG, which was the club’s first major trophy since 1971.
Former Wigan & Fulham man, Jimmy Bullard recently showed that he’s still got it! Check out the video below…
McAuley upgrade
It is no surprise to see Gerrard eyeing an experienced centre back, something he hoped he would gain with last summer’s move for Gareth McAuley.
The Northern Irishman has struggled with injuries throughout the campaign, and Mexer is nine years younger at 30, so should have more miles left in the tank.
But how good is the 6 ft 2 centre back? Well, he has been capped 46 times by Mozambique, and has started 27 Ligue 1 games this season, per Whoscored.
He is not the most physically imposing defender, but his ball-playing abilities are elite, completing 89% of his passes in domestic action this season.
He also has European experience to offer, playing a huge part in Rennes’ surprising progress out of the Europa League group stages this year, eventually falling to Arsenal in the round of 16.
With Connor Goldson already bossing the role of the physical, commanding, vocal leader, Mexer’s composure and experience could be perfect alongside the former Brighton man.
Valued at just £3.6m by Transfermarkt, bringing Mexer to Ibrox makes perfect sense, and after McAuley flopped perhaps the 30 year-old can finally bring a little consistency to the Gers’ backline.
