Sir Alex Ferguson has stated that Robin van Persie is in line for his Manchester United debut against Everton on Monday night.
The Old Trafford club are on the brink of signing the Arsenal forward, after the Netherlands international made his intention to leave north London clear.
With the Premier League season starting this weekend, the Scottish coach has praised his attacking options and stated that Van Persie is set for inclusion in the first game of the new campaign.
“Of course they are two fantastic players (Wayne Rooney and Robin van Persie), and it’s great to have the both of them,” The Guardian quote Ferguson as saying.
“But also I think what gives us more strength is the combinations I have up front now. If you go back to the ’99 season when I had Andy and Dwight and Teddy and Ole Gunnar – the four best strikers in Europe. So I think I’m going towards that now.
“I’ve got Chicarito [Javier Hernández], Wayne, Robin, Danny Welbeck and I’ve got [Shinji] Kagawa. That’s a fantastic combination of players there. Hopefully I pick the right combinations. It’s great to have a player of Van Persie’s quality to come into the squad as it is. I’m really pleased.
“He is on his way up from London for a medical later this afternoon. We hope that goes according to plan. His agent is in discussions with [United chief executive] David Gill right about now.
“We hope all the things will be tied up, although sometimes medicals do take a bit longer. I am sure he will be available for Monday’s game,” he concluded.
