da 888casino: Since Gerard Houllier’s arrival at Aston Villa the Frenchman has had little time to personalise his squad, and the incoming transfer window would seem like the ideal opportunity for the Villa boss to start rebuilding. The whole equilibrium of Villa’s season was turned upside down not just by O’Neill’s departure but the timing of his resignation, just five days before the start of the new campaign. It was a major disruption and a recovery period is needed “Houllier cannot start making any crucial adjustments until January, and even then the serious work may have to wait until next summer.” This said, there will be introductions to the Villa squad, but whom?
da betobet: Michael Owen has been widely tipped to be reunited with his former boss after the new Villa boss admitted he would be keen to sign the Manchester United striker when the January transfer window opens. Owen is struggling to maintain playing time and “the 30-year-old forward still harbours hopes of playing for England again. He is also said to have hinted in private that he would welcome a move to another Premier League club that could guarantee him a regular starting spot.” With Houllier’s need for a striker and Owen’s international aspirations; are these two certain to reunite come January.
However rumours coming out of France would suggest that Houllier’s attention lies with France striker Bafetimbi Gomis. Gomis currently plays for Lyon, has been capped five times for his country and is seen as the ideal replacement for John Carew, whose Villa days seem numbered. The 25-year-old has been called the ‘Baby Drogba’ in the past and it is thought that a bid in the region of £9.5 would be sufficient enough to land the talented prospect.
Another French man has today been sounded out as potential addition to Houllier’s rebuilding process. Former Arsenal winger Robert Pires is set for a surprise return to the Premier League and Aston Villa seems his likely destination. “The 37-year-old, who was a key part of the Gunners’ ‘Invincibles’ side which went unbeaten for the entire 2003-04 Premier League campaign en route to claiming the title, has been a free agent since his release from Spanish club Villarreal in July.” According to L’Equipe, Villa manager Gerard Houllier, who knows Pires well from his time as technical director of the French national team, is close to signing him on a short-term deal, something that has been confirmed by Villa themselves and he’s set to join up with Houllier later this week.
So there you have it. Three potential January arrivals at Villa Park, the question is what do you guys think? Personally I feel the acquisition of Robert Pires is a strange one. Surely at 37 the former France international is well and truly past it and won’t be able to handle the rigours of the Premier League at this late stage in his career?
